With referenco to my despatch No. 15, of the 4th instant,

on the subject of the destruction caused by the typhoon of the 2nd-3rd instents, I have the honour to report that, in the four dayɛ which have slapsed since the sending of that despatch. conditions locally have materially improved.

The Chinese, exhibiting their usual recuperativa powers, are doing their best to evolve some sort of order out of the

chaos which exists on the city side of the harbour, and to

cope with a task of trementous difficulty.

The two most pressing needs, namely, the shortage of fresh water and foot, have been met to a fairly satisfactory extent, and the ever inoressing piles of dead are being re- moved for burial as quickly as makeshift coffins can be knock-

ed together, With regard to the disposal of the dead, how-

over, much remains - and will remain to be done. In the

meantime, the stench from the foetid mud, ohoked drains, And

unburied corpses, renders living on the Kialat side a very disagreeable and unhealthy business,

Är Beilby Alston, K,0,4,0,, 0.B.,

Kis Majesty'■ Minister,

Peking.
